Sew on snaps, Size 3, 1/2" (12mm)

Dritz Sew-on Snaps - Nickel - Size 3 (1/2", 12mm) Use these Nickel Sew On Snaps Size 3 to create closures for your sweatshirts, cardigans, coats and any other pieces you feel may need fastening. Easy to use and available in a pack of 4, these snaps are a handy accessory to have in your sewing kit as they hold overlapping edges together and have incredible durability due to their nickel-plated steel construction. This size is great for covering with a lightweight silk fabric and using on jackets and even layering under fancy buttons. Whenever I am using a button that has a tough surface that could damage or snag the fabric, I use snaps as the true fastener and just stitch the actual button to the end of the buttonhole. (See the picture of the black jacket in listing photos for example.) A few tips for working with Sew-on snaps Sew-on snaps are hand stitched to the the fabric by working the needle through the side holes. They are a great introduction to fasteners- even for those who are beginners. If you apply them incorrectly, they are easy to take out using a seam ripper without incurring any fabric damage. Chances are, you will either miss-align the snap components or sew them upside down. Even after years of sewing, you may still find yourself having to redo snap application if you're not extra careful in the alignment process. Hint: Thread tacks are a good way to ensure alignment when marking. A sew-on snap is comprised of two functional parts: A ball and a socket. Along the outer edge of the snap are holes through which the snaps are hand sewn to the garment. The socket side, which is the part with the "fastening hole" is generally stitched to the bottom side of a garment's opening. While the ball side, is stitched to the underside of the top layer. As a general rule, you will want to match the color of the thread to the garment. To help securely fasten the snap, I double my thread and run it though some beeswax to condition and strengthen before sewing. For a bit of added durability, it's a good idea add a small bit of interfacing in the area where the snap sections are to be applied. Snap Sizing Smaller snaps are thinner than their larger counterparts, and thus have less holding power. By matching the snap size to the weight of the fabric and the durability needed for the closure, you will be happier with the results.
