                                               Sewing Workshops for Adults

It's been a long time since I've been able to hold regular adult sewing classes (Covid, kids, scheduling!).  Here's a start!  Right now classes will be held on select Thursday mornings from 10:30-Noon.  If there is growing interest, I will offer some weekend options as well.

This Learn to Sew series is designed for beginners as well as those of you who may want to improve you overall sewing technique and knowledge.  The first class of the series will begin by introducing the sewing machine and the essential sewing notions you will need to get started.  The following classes (I think are going to be really fun!) we will learn about fibers and fabrics, and how to select fabric for your projects.  Then about sewing patterns (including how to take complete measurements to determine YOUR size), pattern and fabric layout and how to transfer markings.  In the final session, we will learn a variety of seam finishing techniques and how and when to use them.

For a complete description, please see each class listing, below.

If you have an idea for a class or workshop, please reach out- I'd love to hear from you.

Adult Sewing Classes and Workshops Calendar

Learn to Sew Session 1:: Get to know your machine

In this class you will learn all the basics of sewing, including learning the parts of the sewing machine and how they work, how to wind a bobbin, thread the machine and troubleshoot common issues. Once you've threaded the machine you'll learn how to sew a seam as well as the concept and importance of seam allowance and seam lines.

Learn to Sew Session 2::All About Fabric

Selecting fabric for a project is one of the most exciting - and important steps in creating a garment. Among the sewing skills that you will develop over time is the ability to work with a variety of different fabrics. Working well with fabric includes choosing fabrics that are suitable for a particular project, as well as the appropriate needles, thread, sewing techniques and machine settings. In this workshop, we are going to be discussing fabrics and fibers. How to select the right fabric for your project, as well as the differences between knit, woven and non-woven fabrics. We will cover a broad swath of textiles from natural fibers such as cotton, linen, wool, and silk to synthetics and even some specialty fabrics such as lace and sequins. You will gain a better understanding of fabric, fibers and their relative attributes in terms of weight, structure and drape that will enable you to choose fabric with confidence.

Learn to Sew Session 3:: All About Patterns

Ready to start sewing your own clothes, but not sure where to start? This introductory class will break down the basics of garment sewing and help build your confidence in sewing wearable clothing. In this class you will learn how to take your measurements and how to read a garment sewing pattern. You will learn how to find your size, trace a pattern and cut it out. We will go over all that goes into preparing your fabric for sewing. We will look at indie patterns as well as the "Big 4" (Butterick, Simplicity, McCalls and Vogue Patterns). You will learn to read a sewing pattern, understand how it relates to fabric and methods of cutting & tracing, and some basic adjustment techniques.
